Devices of the Devil

In order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. (2 Cor 2:11)

The devil has many names and symbols. All of them reveal his twisted, perverted nature and mode of operation. He is the enemy of God. We can be protected if we know the schemes used by him.

His devices
1. He manipulates our mind. Satan’s main device is deception.
a) Trick us into seeing something that is not there (eg Gen 3)
b) Trick us into seeing nothing out of a real thing (eg Matt 28)
c) Even strong believers fell prey (eg Peter in Matt 16)
d) Result in doubt, disbelief, disobedient, denials, delusions
e) Peter says “prepare your minds for action” (1 Pet 1:13)

2. Satan’s perverted nature tempt our old self and body.
a) Lust of the flesh, eyes and pride of life (1 John 2:15-17)
b) Wear us down through trials and persecutions. (1 Thes 3:1-3)
c) Result in discontentment, distraction, discouragement, disappointment
d) HALT – Don’t let yourself be Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired.
e) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Col 3:2)

3. Satan has a destructive character.
a) Satan tries to destroy us through our mind and our body.
b) He destroys relationship and disrupt harmony.
c) He perfected selfishness, favoritism, narrow-mindedness, lack of fellowship
d) Result in disengagement, discord, disassociation, division
e) Paul urged unity (1 Cor 1 :10-11. 12:18-25, John 17:20)

The serious threat of Satan’s dangerous devices is real. We are not to be ignorant about his schemes and we need to be strong in the Lord and put on the armor of God. We are encourage because our God have overcome them, and the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

The God whom we pray to (Nehemiah 1)

A pastor was concern that every time he preaches on Sunday, a particular member of the congregation would fall asleep. After several weeks, he decided he must confront this brother who is quite prominent in that he is also a member of the church committee or board. So one Sunday, sure enough when he begin to preach, the brothers immediately doze off. After the service, the pastor pulled the brother aside and confronted him. “Why do you fall asleep every time when I preach?” To this the brother answered, “My dear pastor, will I fall asleep if I don’t trust you?”

Well this morning, I thank you for trusting me but I don’t want you to go to sleep. I will do my best to keep you awake.

The topic for today message is the God to whom we pray to. The passage of reference is Nehemiah chapter 1. Let us start by reading this chapter.

Nehemiah's Prayer
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire."
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said: "O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's house, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
8 "Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, 9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.'
10 "They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand. 11 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man." I was cupbearer to the king.
After realize the extend of the ruin of Jerusalem, Nehemiah was very upset and disappointed. He began to fast and pray. I think this prayer is especially relevant to all of us whenever we have a project to complete and we need to look to the Lord for guidance.

As Christian, we have the privilege to speak to God. G.K. Chesterton says, "The worst moment for an atheist is when he feels a profound sense of gratitude and has no one to thank.” On the other hand, imagine the despair and disappointment when you want to seek help and there is no one who has the power to change things to talk to. Fortunately, prayer is our partnership with God, our chance to join forces with God's power. In his book, Prayer, Philip Yancey writes that prayer is a window into knowing the mind of God, whose kingdom is entrusted to all of us frail, selfish people on earth.

When we come to God in prayer, first of all we must know to whom we are praying. We will pray in unhealthy fear if we believe that our God is quick to punish, authoritative and unforgiving. On the other hand, we can pray without acknowledging our sinful status and believe in an indulgent father who overlooks sins. We need to have a correct view of God.

This morning, by looking at Nehemiah’s prayer, we hope that we can learn two things together. By looking at how Nehemiah pray, we learn his attitude in prayer and from his prayer, we can take a glimpse at this God to whom he prayed to.

1) It was a prayer of contrition. This is an awesome yet loving God who is sovereign and above all.

4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said: "O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands.

Nehemiah’s heart was so disturbed that he sat down and wept, and mourned for days over the condition of Jerusalem. He begin by acknowledging the great and awesome God who is also full of love to those who obeys Him.

Nehemiah realized the seriousness of our depraved condition and acknowledged that this God that we pray to is awesome yet loving. It was a prayer with contrition. A contrite person has a unique access to God. Because God listens to and delights in the prayers of the humble, those who come without ulterior motives or in violation of his explicit commands, are as children to a loving parent. It is better to have a God who is greater than humanity, a God who has the ability to take us beyond where we can go on our own?

The God described in the Bible is that God. He claims to be the Creator of the universe -- a transcendent, all-knowing, all-powerful being who has always existed and is the sustainer of all things. God deserves to be honored, revered and feared by all because of who he is.

In Ezra 10, we read that when the people realized their state of sin of their inter marriages. 1While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.

Likewise in the new testament, we read in Matthew 26 after Peter denied the Lord 3 times: Immediately a rooster crowed. 75Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The problem is that we don’t see many bitter tears nowadays. Remember Job sitting naked in a pile of ashes. That’s a humble heart that submits to his creator. Today it is more of questioning God. From the first page of the bible until the last page in Revelation, God’s awesome characters are displayed. At times we may struggle with things that we cannot understand. At one extreme we read about God’s loving compassionate and mercy character and in another we read about His intolerant of sin. Take the 10th plague as an example. The 10th plague in Exodus recorded the death of the Egyptian children. We can’t help but think about the innocent children suffer under this plague. Pharaoh the evil man who is responsible for this plague lost his first born yet his own life was preserved. How are we to reconcile what we know about God’s goodness and justice with this plague. Adam and Eve dies for failing to obey God’s command. The whole generation of Noah was wiped out in the flood. Sodom and Gomorrah was obliterated completely. Why are the pages of scripture stained with blood? But dead is the reality of fallen humanity. We pay for the sin, even with stories of injustice that happen everyday. Who are we to question God’s sovereign plan and timing? We can and we must come to him with a contrite heart.


2) It was a prayer of confession. This is a God to whom we are accountable because He is Holy.

I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's house, have committed against you 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

Nehemiah’s conviction on God’s greatness and his believe that God will respond to his prayer resulted in humility. He knew he did not deserve it so he confessed the sin of Israelites and himself and his father’s house. By confessing our sins to God, we are acknowledging to God that we are accountable to him. We are approaching a righteous and holy God.

Confession is acknowledging the gulf between a righteous God and a sinful people and that we are at His mercy. We confessed because we are grieved by sin. We hate sin because it is offensive to the God we love. Sin blasphemes God. Sin curses God. Sin seeks to destroy God’s work and His kingdom. In fact sin killed His Son.

Chuck Swindoll illustrated that confession is like a clinic at the bottom of a stiff highway. Although there are signs that tell the motorist to slow down because of the treacherous and dangerous road, many people do not pay attention and so they have accident at the bottom of the hill. But because there is a clinic there to help them, it relief them of their pain and they can get up and go again. Of course the better way is to pay attention to the sign and avoid any mishaps. So confession is like that, we humbly come to God, admit our guilt and mistake. Sorry, Father, I messed up. I was impatient today. Sorry Father, I lusted today. I sin today. And the good news is that, God is faithful and He will forgive us.

John is clear in his epistle (1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.) that if we confess, God will listen and ready to forgive and bring us closer and narrow the gap that is in between. As the saying goes, “It is better to keep short account with God.

But problem with us today is that we think we must do more in order to come to God. God’s forgiveness is purely his sovereignty and does not depend on us. We make the mistake that we must do something in order to gain God’s favour. The jailer asked Paul ?What must I do to be saved?” Paul answered him “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved”. There is no doing just believe in your heart.

Many years ago, a product was introduced in the market. Anyone can bake a cake easily and quickly. You just need to add water into the pre-mix cake ingredient and pop it into the oven. No need to hassle on measuring the right amount of the different ingredients, no need to spend time mixing and beating and still unsure if you have done it right. You would think this product will sell. Any amateur can bake a cake but surprise, surprise, sales didn’t go up. The manufacture was at a lost and could not understand why the products would not sell. It was not shortage of varieties or poor end products. After several months, the manufacturer decided to add a simple additional instruction. Instead of just add water, this time, it is just add water and an egg. Suddenly sales soars, people started to buy. The reason sales soar was attributed to the fact that people believe they play a role, an important role in baking the cake and that the cake is much enhanced with the addition of an egg . Such is the case of confession. We don’t buy in when God says that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the death, you will be saved (Rom 10:9). We want to add in extra effort in order to believe that God will hear us.


3) It was a prayer of confidence. This is a God to whom we can trust and count on His promises.

In this part of the prayer, Nehemiah recalls words of Moses and old Testament warnings and promises. First, if Israel disobeyed, they will be scatter and secondly when the captivity is over, God will send them back to Jerusalem, the promised land.

Nehemiah is aware of God’s provision and so he can pray boldly. He knows he can count on the words of God. He is very familiar with God's word and his promises. He quotes almost verbatim the word of God to Moses. God reveals his person and his will through his word. He was reminding God His promise to the Israelites. Real prayer is standing on the promise of God and claim it.

The God of the Bible claims that nothing on Earth happens without his say-so. He is completely sovereign over all things.
- Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? (Lam 3:37)
- I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. (Isa 46:10)
- The plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (Psalm 33:11)
- It is the Lord's purpose that prevails. (pro 19:21).
- This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 John 5:14,15)


4) It was a prayer of commitment. This is a God to whom we can have hope and who wants a relationship with us

11 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man."

This is the whole purpose of Nehemiah’s prayer. He was asking God to grant him success as he embarked on this project. Nehemiah will be involved in the rebuilding of the wall. When we ask God in faith, we have to live out the faith with work.

When we pray the prayer of faith, we must believe that we have the answer before we see or feel it. Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24).

When we really believe that God has answered our prayer, we must show our faith by acting like we have the answer before we actually see it! James says that faith without corresponding actions is dead faith (see James 2:17). I show my faith by how I act! And to stand in faith I must act as though God has already sent the answer to my prayer.

To pray with commitment, is also to pray with hope and this has a lot to do with how much we know our God. It is because of the close relationship we have with God that give us the knowledge to pray with hope. We must know this God. Otherwise, it is no different from praying to an idol of whom we have no relation to.

God wants to have a partnership/relationship with us. When Moses was instructed to build the tabernacle for God to dwell in, we read about the people came forward with materials and skill. God raised up skillful craftmen that were filled with the Spirit. Bazalel and Ohalieb. They gave so much that Moses had to ask them to stop. EX 36.

A few generations later, when David was preparing the temple for Solomon to build, he asked the people to offer money, materials and everyone gladly did it. Although it was not God initiative, we read that at the completion of the temple, the holy presence of God was in the temple.

Fast forward again, just about 2000 years ago, the Lord Jesus Christ gave the great commission and he said: “I will build my church”. Yes, the church is growing, today we are an imperfect church, but the Lord added daily to the numbers those who were saved as we read in Acts. God could have change the hearts of sinners in an instant. Why are there thousand of missionary going through hardship after hardship just to advance the gospel. Read the biography of Hudson Taylor, John Huss. Have you read the story of Jim Elliot and 4 of his friends who went to South America. They were butchered while trying to reach the Ecuador Auca Indian. Read the book “through gates of splendor” and feel their commitment. More recently and closer to home, Abu Sayat captured and killed missionary, Martin Burnham and left his wife, Gracia wounded in the leg with a bullet. Read the book, “In the presence of my enemies” and feel the commitment. Why? Why? You asked. That’s because we must exercise our faith, be committed and do what we say and say what we do.

Before I conclude, let me share with you a story about a person who really understand who is this God that he prays to. He has a clear understanding of this God.
Horatio G. Spafford was an attorney in Chicago. He and his wife Anna were pretty well known in Chicago as a legal counsel and businessman. They were also prominent supporters and close friends of DL Moody. He and his family were members of the Fullerton Avenue Presbyterian Church. But during the great Chicago fire in 1871, he lost every one of his real estate holdings that he has invested heavily. Spafford and his wife had learned what it meant to completely trust God in every situation. But their greatest testing came in 1874. Aware of the toll that these disasters had taken on the family, Horatio decided to take his wife and daughters on a vacation to England. Yet just before they set sail, a last-minute business development forced Horatio to delay. Not wanting to ruin the family holiday, Spafford persuaded his family to go as planned. He would follow on later. Mrs. Spafford and their four daughters boarded the French ship "Villa de Havre" on their way to England. But just off the coast of Ireland the ship collided with another ship and sank. All four of the Spafford daughters – Tanetta, Maggie, Annie and Bessie were among the 226 who drowned. But Anna Spafford was among the 47 who were miraculously saved. 9 days later, Horatio finally received a cable sent by his wife which contained the now famous phrase that read "saved alone." As he traveled to England to comfort his wife, he was able again to gain his strength from God with the verse, "All things work together for good to them that love the Lord" (Rom 8:28) He then penned the words to our hymn "It Is Well with My Soul." (The tune was written by Phillip Bliss.) The words which Spafford wrote that day come from 2 Kings 4:26. They echo the response of the Shunammite woman to the sudden death of her only child. Though we are told "her soul is vexed within her", she still maintains that 'It is well." And Spafford's song reveals a man whose trust in the Lord is as unwavering as hers was.

And, Lord haste the day when the faith shall be sight,The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,"Even so" - it is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul,It is well, it is well with my soul.
This is from a man who knows his God so well that he has the confidence and hope in Him.


Conclusions:

Nehemiah's prayer shows that the God to whom we pray to is sovereign, loving, awesome and also holy. He is faithful to his promises and generous in his provision who wants to have a close relationship with us. We must pray to him with the right attitude.

People who missed Christmas

It is exam time. Everyone come into the classroom with fear and trepidation. Then come the professor and he starts to distribute the paper. Everyone is wondering what questions are there and if they are going to do well in the exam. The professor said “Do not turn the paper yet. You are not to start the exam until I tell you so.” That adds on to the suspense and everyone is anxious. When he said start, everyone quickly turn the paper. Suddenly they was a long silence and everyone look at each other in puzzle. They realize that the paper is full of answers. The professor had filled up the questions in his own hand writing. Everyone look at each other wondering what is going on. After awhile, the professor announced that the examination is over. All the answers in the script are correct. All of you got an A+. Everyone is in a shock. The professor then went around and asked, “Did your study get you an A+?”. No. “Did all your attendance get you an A+? “No. The reason all of you get an A+ is because the creator of this exam has decided to take it on your behalf.

All of us also have to sit for this exam given by our creator, God. We are all sinner by God’s standard. We would have failed miserably except that more than two thousand years ago, the Creator himself decided to take the exam on our behalf. On that cross Jesus provided all the answers to all the questions and passed with flying colors. Jesus died on that cross to take away our sins. Because of what He did, today all of us are A+ student in God’s eyes. That’s what he has done. Not by the work we have done but by the grace of God. This is the story of Christmas, What a Savior!

But we can only be an A+ student in the eyes of God if we allow God to sit the exam on our behalf. Bible teacher, John MacArthur had preached a wonderful sermon on people who missed Christmas. This morning I want to share with you four of his characters from the bible who missed this opportunity. Let’s see if you can identify with them

Christmas is notably one of the most important occasion in a yearly calendar. It is the most important and wonderful time of the year in many part of the world, including our country, which is pre-dominantly Muslim. And through out the world, especially in the commercial sphere, its importance cannot be undermined because it is the most profitable time. From shopping centers to airline to hotel and to entertainment outlets, this is business opportunities. But even with all these media attention, advertisement and public relation, there are still many people who missed Christmas. Unfortunately the simplicity of the birth of Christ is buried in the sea of business, busyness and paganism. This happened today, but it also happened during the time recorded in the Bible.

Let me read from Luke 2 to tell you about the first Christmas.

1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register. 4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Hotel overbooked is nothing new to me. Years after years, in Kota Kinabalu, in particular, it is difficult to get rooms in the hotel. While it is unpleasant to deal with this problem, I remind myself that this problem is not new. Now, Who do you think missed the first Christmas? The first person who missed Christmas was the innkeeper. It was right in front of him but he missed it. He had to deal with Joseph and Mary and he had no room for them.

The innkeeper missed Christmas because to him, it was just another birth. Not only that, he was indifferent in that he didn’t even call for help because verse 7 said that it was a lonely birth. You see, the innkeeper was pre-occupied because the city was bursting with people. He was busy caring for his business. He was not hostile or uncaring. For him, it was all about business. He was just real busy.

A lot of people are like that. All they care about is filling their empty soul with stuff that really does not matter and so they missed the Christ of God. Look at your own life, did you spend more time shopping then you did adoring Christ? Did you spend more money on stuff then you invest in His kingdom? Then may be you are trapped like the innkeeper too.

Let’s meet another man who missed the first Christmas. This man really missed it. He was not like the innkeeper who was ignorant. In fact, he was very well informed. He was Herod. Turn to Matthew chapter 2:1. 1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."

Did Herod really want to worship the child Jesus? Verse 1 and verse 3 address Herod as king and why would him be disturbed as we read in verse 3. That’s because verse 2 says there is another king coming. Herod felt threatened and insecure. He was afraid of another king. Go on and read verse 16.

16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.

When Herod realized that the wise men did not get back to him, he was furious and he gave order to get rid of all children who were two years old and under in order to wipe out the child who is going to be the king of the Jews. Herod missed Christmas because of fear and jealousy. There are many people who missed Christmas because of the same basic kind of fear that Herod had. Herod fear was that somebody else would take his throne. A lot of people are like that. Herod was not going to let this little child interfere with his career, with his position, with his power, with his ambition, with his plan and with his life style. He was not about to let someone else be the king. Are you like Herod who missed Christmas because you don’t want Jesus to occupy the throne in your life? You want to be the Lord of your own life, master of your fate and afraid to crown Him Lord. That’s tragic because his kingdom is so much more glorious.


There is a third group of people who missed Christmas.
Matt 2:4When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 6" 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.

The Chief priests and the teachers of the laws knew about the coming of Christ. But nowhere do we read about them flocking and responding to him. They are the knowledgeable one. They are the theologians, the brainy one. They are the Sanhedrin who ruled the Jewish courts. They can even quote scripture, ie. Micah where the Messiah will be born. Yet they did not even bother to go find out about the birth of the Messiah. They were in Jerusalem, only 2 miles north of Bethlehem. Why did they missed Christmas? They are indifference and they are complacent. They are so proud in their position that they did not even realize the state that they are in. There are many people in the world today ignore Christ because they don’t know they are sinful. They don’t care about the saviour because they don’t know they have to be saved.

The innkeeper missed Christmas because of ignorant preoccupation. Herod missed Christmas because of jealous fear. The chief priests and Sanhedrin missed Christmas because of indifferent pride. But there is another group of people who missed Christmas.

Turn with me to Luke 4.
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." 20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.
24"I tell you the truth," he continued, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff. 30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

This is probably the saddest part of all. Nazareth Missed Christmas. Jesus was their own son and they rejected Him. They even wanted to killed him as we read in verse 29. Why do you think Nazareth missed Christmas. Familiarity. They know Jesus so well that He was not special to them. Are you one of them? The getting used to attending church, raise in a Christian home. You know Him so well that you took Him for granted. You have heard so many Christmas stories, heard so many sermons, attended so many Sunday school and bible lessons that your convictions waned. As John MacArthur said, Familiarity breeds contempt and the deadly familiarity with Christmas truth breed a stony heart. You better respond while your heart is still soft or your heart will become hard and you will not have the opportunity to respond.

There are many reasons why people miss Christmas. They miss it because of ignorant preoccupation, they miss it because of jealous fear, they miss it because of prideful indifference, and they even miss it because of being so familiar with it. But behind all these reasons is one reason: unbelief. They will not believe. They refuse to believe. What ever the excuse, whatever the reasons you have been missing Christmas, if you receive Christ and believe in Him, Christmas will become a reality in your life. It can happen today. That’s between you and God. So Let Christ sit for you for the exam and be an A+ student in the eyes of God.

Why we don't grow spiritually

The Bible makes it very clear that all of us are sinners and must be born again. This is only the first step, the Bible is also very clear in commanding us Christians to grow into maturity. Hebrew 6:1 urges the believers to leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity. 1 Peter 2:2 ask to crave for pure spiritual milk so that we may grow up in our salvation.

There are many reasons why Christians do not grow spiritually. In 1 Cor. 1: 7Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. Paul said that we do not lack spiritual gift and so we cannot use that as an excuse.

Nevertheless, I believe all of us can very quickly come up with many reasons why a Christian does not grow spiritually. Some very obvious answer will be failure to read the bible, failure to pray often and then probably the care of the world out weight the care for the spiritual things. All of these are very valid reasons.

However, we will look into the question from a practical example. We will look into the life of one of the twelve disciples who had followed Jesus and why he did not grow, at least, at one stage in his life. That disciple is Philip.

There are at least 3 Philips that we can tell from the Bible. The accounts of Philip, the disciple can be found in all the gospels. Today, we will read about Philip in the gospel of John.

Let’s turn to John chapter 1, verse 43 and read about the calling of Philip. Jesus Christ called Philip to follow Him. Not only did he follow, he even told his neighbor Nathaneal. Here we know that Philip is accepting who Jesus claimed to be, his faith is genuine.

The next time we read about Philip, it is found in John chapter 6. Let me just quickly go through what has happened in between chapter 1 and chapter 6 to show you that 1 year has passed. You would expect that after 1 year of following Jesus, Philip’s faith would have grown. His faith and his understanding of the purpose of Jesus Christ’s mission should have been clear. Right?

John Chapter 2 records the first miracle of Jesus who turned the water into wine. In verse 1 and verse 11, it says that the disciples were there. In other words, they all witnessed the miracles. As we continue to read we see that they spent the Passover in Jerusalem (John2:13).

John 3, Jesus was with Nicodemus and in verse 22, together with the disciples they went to Judea. Then in John 4:3 They are back to Galelee but went through Samaria and saw Jesus with the woman at the well. In John 4:50, they witnessed Jesus healed the official’s son. In John 5:1. They are at Jerusalem again, this time Jesus healed the invalid at the pool.

Now we come to John 6:1, Jesus is at Galilee. There was a great crowd of people who had followed Jesus because they saw the miraculous sign done by Jesus. Verse 4 says Passover feast is near. This means since John 2;13, at least a year has passed.

Next we read about Jesus asking Philip where can we buy bread to feed these people? After following Jesus for one year and witnessing the many miracles that he had performed. We would expect Philip’s faith to be strong and that he has grown in his spiritual life. Instead we heard a very humanly logically answer from Philip. “Eight month’s wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”. When Jesus is looking for our faith and all we can do is give him the fact. Lord you know how many people you need? How much it will cost? How long it will take? Lord I am the only one! How often are we overwhelm with the circumstances and never show faith in Jesus. How often do we never saw beyond the circumstances and never took into consideration the power of God. The 1 year that Philip spent with Jesus and all that he had listened, seen, heard & witnessed was over powered by the circumstances. Like the story of the tortoise and the hare. Philip, the hare, started with a bang, but half way along the way, he fails asleep. By the way this sound very much like us, isn’t it. We become slack, we forgot about the day we were saved and the spiritual power that we have and the tremendous energy and zeal we have.

The next time we read about Philip, it is in John 12. Here Jesus was with the disciples and he predicted his death and a voice from heaven spoke loud and clear that God will be glorified and Jesus told the disciples that the voice is for their benefit. The disciples’ faith should be strong now.

The next and the last time we read about Philip is in John 14. Thomas asked how do we know the way and Jesus answered "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." 8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

Duh! Jesus just told Philip that you want to know or access the Father, you look for me. You know the Father by knowing me. And the very next question he asked is show us the Father. Philip’s problem here is that there is a lack of appreciation of Jesus. Of all the times Philip was with Jesus, he had heard what Jesus had claimed to be. Very often, we as Christians took Jesus for granted. Yes we believe who he claimed he was especially when we first encountered Him. But along the year Jesus is just another person.

Jesus told Philip, “How can you said that?” But this is not Philip’s only problem.

In verse 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

Here Jesus is saying that 1) I have access to the Father, 2) The words I said are from the Father and 3) the Father through me is doing His work. So not only was Philip failed to appreciate the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, he failed to appreciate the words that Jesus had spoken and lastly, he failed to appreciate the work that Jesus had done and all this are related to the Father, God.

Jesus had said many things, Jesus had made many claims.

- - I give living water that will never thirst (John 4:14).
- I am the bread of life (John 6:35)
- I am light of the world (John 8:12)
- Before Abraham was born, I am (John 8:58)
- I am the gate (John10:9)
- I am the good shepherd (John 10:11)
- I am the resurrection and life (John 11:25)
- I am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6)

During these claims, Philip was there. In addition, there were many parables and teaching Jesus had shared with them. But Philip failed to heed the word of Jesus and did not take to heart the word spoken by Jesus. If he had listen carefully to what the master taught, he would have known the Master better. We get to know the Lord by believing the words he says. We trust the word of God said by the Son of God. The word Jesus said was the word of God. By listening and following his instruction, we would have been better followers.

The third problem as mentioned is that even though Philip had hung around Jesus for about 3 years and witnessed all the work carried out by Jesus, it did not appreciate it. As a result, we saw him asked questions that revealed his lack of faith and immaturity. Philip has walked with Jesus day by day since the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. He has seen miracles: Turn water into wine (John 2), Heal official’s son (John 4), Heal the lame at the pool (John 5), Feeds 5000 and walks on water (John 6), Heals the Blind (John 9), Raised Lazarus (John 11). He has witnessed Jesus’ incredible and inexplicable authority. Yet, his question illustrates his immaturity.

Learn from Philip. He hung out around Jesus for 3 years, yet he did not appreciate the person of Jesus, the word of Jesus and the work of Jesus. With attitude like that, how do you expect to grow?

Unfortunately, this is the last time we read about Philip. The good news is that based on historical record, Philip did well. After the death of Jesus, Philip went on to carry the gospel to Asia Minor where he even died a martyr. Our only guess is that he learned his lessons and probably with the help of the other disciples, he grew in his spiritual walk.

Before I conclude, I want to share with you the story of the hare and the tortoise that we spoke about earlier. In the story of the hare and the tortoise, the hare started well and assuming all well, he was getting too comfortable and begin to slack down and even took a nap. By the time he woke up, he lose the race.

But the story does not end here. The hare was not happy, so he calls up the tortoise and ask for another race. The tortoise agreed and the next day they met at the same starting point and begin the race. This time, the hare was diligent and he keep on running. When he reached the area where he had built the comfortable resting place, he makes sure he went over, ruffle it and continue his run. He learned his lesson to press on. As expected, this time he won the race handsomely.

However, the tortoise was not happy. He challenges the hare to another race, only this time, it is on a different route. The hare, feeling good and confident, accepted the challenge. The next day, they met and the race begins. The hare did not want to slow down and start the race with pace and confidence. Suddenly, the path lead him to a stream, he was not able to cross. Pacing along the bank, he could not find a way to cross the stream. Then came the tortoise, of course without much problem, although slow in pace, he was able to complete the race.

But the is not the end of the story. The hare then called the tortoise and suggested another race. This time the rule will change again. He told the tortoise, when on dry land, I will carry you and when in the stream, you will carry me, together not only will we complete the race, we will complete in better time. The tortoise thinks it was a good idea and together they completed the race in record time.

Now we can apply this story to our spiritual growth. We can be like the hare, started with a bang but like Philip, faltered along the way. We can likewise experience road block that prevent our progress. But all these are internal that depends on ourselves. Spiritual growth can be enhance with the help of our fellow believers too. We should be like the hare and the tortoise, utilize each other strength and gifts to help each other to grow.

Yes, we must grow spiritually. In order to achieve this, we much first remember that the key link is Jesus Christ our Lord. We must first appreciate who he is, follow His words and appreciate His works. This is very much a personal and internal work. Externally, we must help each other. Remember the hare and the tortoise. Utilizing our different gifts to teach, encourage, correct, direct, support and help each other to grow spiritually.

Jesus’ parables on money

Anne Graham told of a story about a man who bought a bird that can sing. But after bringing the bird home, he discovered that the bird can’t sing. So he went back and ask the shopkeeper. “I am sorry”, said the shop keeper, “you need to buy a ladder and put it in the cage. The bird needs to climb the ladder to the top and then it will sing”. So the man bought the ladder, brought it home and placed it in the cage. He watched. He waited. Nothing happened. He went back and confronted the shopkeeper and was told this time that the bird needs a mirror. “OK, give me the mirror”. Said the man. He placed the mirror on top of the ladder and waited. Still no song. He went back to the store and this time was told that the bird not only needed a ladder, a mirror, it also needs a bell. However, after putting the bell, the bird still didn’t sing. He went back to the store and asked the owner what was the problem. The bird needs a swing. The man bought the swing and happily installed in the cage. He watched excitedly as the bird climb up the ladder, take a good look at the mirror, ring the bell and jump onto the swing and swing. Before it could open its mouth to sing, the bird fell to the bottom of the cage, broke its neck and died/ Furious, the man brought the dead bird to the shop and asked for a refund. “What do you mean it is dead? Did you feed him? The bird needs food to sing”. How often it happens to us that we forgot to feed ourselves but tirelessly pursue the thing of this world. Climbing the ladder, equip ourselves and making a name for ourselves and pursue the pleasure of this world, we forgot to feed on spiritual food. In search for the song, many ended dead.

To many of our youths here, when you leave school and begin work, you will join many others in search of your song. You will pursue money, happiness and pleasures in this world. Just make sure that you have your priority right, you need the right food.

Society places a great deal of importance on physical wealth. If we are not careful, it is easy to get caught up in material pursuits such as that new car or that new pair of NIKE tennis shoes. Even though having nice things is enjoyable, it is not where the greatest importance should be placed. Money itself is not a bad thing. It is the attitude towards it that makes the difference. I do not deny that money is important. While money cannot guarantee you happiness, no money will definitely make you unhappy.

The Scriptures has a lot to say about money. In fact, 16 out of the many of Christ's parables, deal with money. More is said, did you know, in the New Testament, about money then about Heaven and Hell combined? Five times more is said about money than about prayer. On the subject of prayer and faith there are 500 plus verses, on the subject of money and possessions there are 2,000 verses.

Because there are many verses touching on this subject, on the surface the Scripture would seem to be confusing. For example, proverb 21:20 says a wise man has a surplus in his home while a fool has bare cupboards. Another Proverb says that a poor man has God’s blessings, and a rich man is a fool. The Lord himself also mentioned about how difficult it is for the rich to enter into the kingdom of heaven. And at the same time we also read about him dining and feasting in the rich people such as Lazarus’s home and the tax collectors (Luke 6:29). In Luke 9:3, when the Lord sent out the 12 disciples, he told them: Take nothing for the journey, no staff, no bag, no bread, no money. Yet, we read about they carry purse, They even have a treasurer, Judas who is in charge of money. Then in His parables, one He rebuked a rich fool who built larger barns to store his surplus and in another he rebuked the man who failed to invest a large surplus wisely. So which is correct. Of course we know that the Scripture is always right and is never in conflict. The most important thing is that we read the Scripture with an open heart and the Lord will show us the way.

Because of time constraint, what I will do this morning is to quickly go through 3 parables of the Lord on the subject of money and from there pick up a few simple yet vital truth that all of us can learn. Bearing in mind that today is Youth Sunday and the message is gear towards them, although it is also applicable to the older youth like you and me.

The parable of Ten Minas (Luke 19:11-27)

- The money are entrusted to us, like a master putting money in the care of the servants.
- The money does not belong to us. The servants said it clearly, Your minas (16,18) and the third servant (20) said “Here is Your mina.”
- Don’t hide the talents given to you. Don’t be lazy. Or you will be called wicked.
- Even though all servants are given the same amount, each gained different amount based on their ability.
- As long as there is effort, there is reward.
- The master praises them for being faithful and not shrewd or smart entrepreneurs. He said you good servant and because you are trustworthy in a very small matter, I give you more. The reward was great.
- But what is the purpose of gaining more money. We move on to the next parable

The parable of the shrewd Steward (Luke 16:1-13)

- The master commented the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. He was impressed by his ingenuity and craftiness.
- Non Christian behave better as non Christians compare to us Christian behave as Christians
- Use the money and resources given to us to help others and to gain soul
- When Moses was instructed to build the tabernacle for God to dwell in, we read about the people came forward with materials and skill. God raised up skillful craftmen that were filled with the Spirit. Bazalel and Ohalieb. They gave so much that Moses had to ask them to stop. EX 36.
- A few generations later, when David was preparing the temple for Solomon to build, he asked the people to offer money, materials and everyone gladly did it. Although it was not God initiative, we read that at the completion of the temple, the holy presence of God was in the temple.
- Fast forward again, just about 2000 years ago, the Lord Jesus Christ gave the great commission and he said: “I will build my church”. Yes, the church is growing, today we are an imperfect church, but the Lord added daily to the numbers those who were saved as we read in Acts. Since then, money and lives were spent for the advancement of the gospel. The world we are in today is definitely more affluence and no excuse for not using our resources to advance the kingdom.
- The message is quite the same as the previous parable. Again our faithfulness counts. Even with little things
- No servant can serve two masters. God demands our steadfast faithfulness.
- Suddenly the message is clear, Yes, we want to gain more money but that is not our main objective in life. We certainly cannot let money replace our God.
- This lead us to the next parable

The parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:13-21)

- A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions (v15)
- To store up treasure in heaven and rich towards God
- Don’t trust in our wealth
- Be content. In hotel we say “if there anything else you need that or do to make you happy, please let me know.” . “ Is there anything you need or do to make you happy, we will show you how you can live without it.”
- Continue reading this chapter, the Lord told the disciples, not to worry but seek ye first the His kingdom and all these things will be given to you.

Conclusions:

Our money, treasure, possessions do not belong to us. We are only the care taker.
We are to be faithful in using the money and possessions given to us
We are to use the money for God. It is for the advancement of His kingdom.
We are to serve God and not money.
We are to be content and be rich towards God so that we can give him the full Lordship.

Money is important. As we read in proverb 10:4, Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. Don’t stay poor but at the same time don’t make money your priority. Proverb 28: 19-20. He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
Don’t be like the bird in the cage, in the pursue of money and richness, keep looking for the ladder, the mirror, the bell and the swing and forget about the important thing and mission here on earth. We will end up like the bird, exhausted and dead.

Faith in the workplace


Tomorrow is Monday, the start of another week for us either in a paid or unpaid work that involve the world. Most of us are Christian and something else – office worker, homemaker, mechanic, teacher, sales personnel and so on. The average Christian spends less than five percent of their waking time at church. Yet we emphasize so much in this five percent and very little in the world of daily work. Christianity is not merely something that one practices within the walls of the church. Rather, living out one¹s faith is a 24/7 matter and that surely includes our life at our workplace since work occupies such a large proportion of our lives. Dwight Moody once said that out of 100 people, 1 will read the bible, but the other 99 will read Christians. Even in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, people around him look at him from the angle of his profession. “Isn't this the carpenter?” They asked in Mark 6:3. Likewise, people around us will question: “Isn’t this the teacher?”, “Isn’t this the Accountant?”; “Isn’t this the lawyer?”.

The question is this: Is our faith transforming our work or is our work changing our faith.

Following Jesus by taking our faith into the workplace is not going to be easy in today pluralistic society. It is however, a ground full of opportunities for us to exercise our faith. I believe there are three simple principles that can help us in our workplace. These three principles are taken from the story of David and Goliath. David’s attitude at work (ie. fighting Goliath) is what we should emulate. Confront with a big task at work, where is our faith? The Israelites’ attitude was “Wow!, so big, cannot fight, sure lose”; whereas David’s attitude was “wow!, SO BIG, CANNOT MISS, SURE WIN”.

The three principles are CONFIDENCE in our faith, COMPETENT at our work and have CHARACTER at our workplace.

1. CONFIDENCE in our faith

How easy it is for us to forget we are Christian whenever we are in a minority position. So many times we choose to bury our light under the bed because at our workplace, we feel so small, we could be the only one who is a believer in our work place. Suddenly our God is not so great anymore. Here in the Church, we sing with the loudest voice, we sing holy holy God, powerful and everlasting and tomorrow these verses mean nothing at all.

How can we display our faith if our confidence in our God waiver?

Let me share with you the story of Coca cola. How a giant cola company made the biggest blunder just because suddenly they lost their confidence in their product.

As you know, the Coca-Cola Company is the world's largest cola maker. There are literally hundred of cola in the world: RC cola, Pepsi Cola, Star Cola, Inca Cola, mecca Cola and even our own Malaysian Sabah Gardinia Cola. Since the 1800 when coca cola first introduced to the world, it has always sit on the number one position. According to one survey, it is a product recogizable by more than 94% of the world population.

Coca Cola nearest rival is of course Pepsi Cola. These two companies have been keen competitor for hundred of years. In the 1980s Pepsi began a series of campaign that portrait it as a choice of the new generation. They used a lot of young and famous people such as Michael Jackson, Britney Spears to take a sip at Pepsi and declare to the world it is the cola of their choice. Pepsi- the choice of a new generation became a famous slogan.

This of course has a great impact and put a lot of heat on Coca Cola. Sales of Pepsi shoot up dramatically.

Then Pepsi came out with a very successful and brilliant marketing work - blind sip taste. The randomly selected tester is first blind folded and he is given 2 cups of cola. Taking a sip and savoring the taste, Pepsi is able to show that almost 6 out of every 10 tests, the blind folded tester preferred Pepsi. This was shown repeatedly on the TV. There is no data manipulation, there is no hidden camera, consumers began to doubt on their taste. If in a blind test, I like the taste of Pepsi, why am I buying coke all the time? Coca Cola was even more worry, isn’t us the real thing, isn’t our cola give us that refreshing unbeatable taste that place us as number 1?

Coca cola’s confidence in their product dropped like a bombshell. They have to do something. They began a new formula and do their own secret test. This new formula was a sweeter variation with less tang, it was also slightly smoother. After spending about US4 million dollars and thousand of blind tests, they are ready to introduce to the world a new and improved coke. So on April 23rd, 1985, in front of more than two hundred TV and newspaper reporters, the new coke was introduced. The Chairman of the company has a renewed confidence and he declared that “This is the surest thing we have ever done”.

The change to the world's best selling soft drink was heard by 81 percent of the United States population within twenty-four hours of the announcement. Within a week of the change, one thousand calls a day were flooding the company's eight hundred number. Most of the callers were shocked and/or outraged, many said that they were considering switching to Pepsi. Within six weeks, the eight hundred number was being jammed by six thousand calls a day. The company also fielded over forty thousand letters, which were all answered and each person got a coupon for the new Coke. Many American consumers of Coca-Cola asked if they would have the final say. Many coke drinkers became outrage that the very coke that they have enjoyed is now not available and this new coke taste awful. People brought trucks load of old coke and stock up their basement. Association of old coke drinkers was formed. When Pepsi heard that the Coca-Cola company was changing its secret formula they said that it was a decision that Pepsi tastes better. Roger Enrico, the president and CEO of Pepsi-Cola wrote a letter to every major newspaper in the U.S. to declare the victory. Later he even wrote a book called “The other guy blinked-How Pepsi won the Cola war”.

On July 10, 1985, eighty seven days after the new coke was introduced, Coke bowed down to the demand and brought back the old coke. They have to because market share continued to drop and consumer protest was everywhere. To save face, they called the old coke classic coke but continue to market the new coke as Coke. However, the new coke never took off and production eventually stopped.

The comeback of old Coke drove stock prices to the highest level. Coke eventually claims back the lost market share, and to today remains as the number 1 cola in the world.

Pepsi is smart to use a blind sip test. In taste tests, drinkers were more likely to respond positively to sweeter drinks, and Pepsi had the advantage over Coke because it is much sweeter. When you sip a little you may prefer that sweet taste but when you drink it as a whole, sometime the sweetness will overcome you. There is nothing new in this, but Coke’s confidence was shaken and they taught us a valuable lesson. So often, we may be put in a position such that we begin to doubt our belief and our confidence in God faded. If our God is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6); and agree with Peter that, “Lord, to whom shall we go, You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God ” (John 6:68 ) – we must go out there and bring this confidence and not to blink when the outside force seem so strong.

I will come back to this principle a little while later. For now let’s turn to Principle No.2.

2. COMPETENT in our work

We can display as much confidence in our faith at our workplace, but it means nothing if our competency at work is lacking. If you ask me to choose between Dentist A who is a Christian but lousy dentist and Dentist B who is a non-Christian but excellent in his dental work, I will advise you to visit Dentist B.

Col 3:23 says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men”. Such should be out attitude when we report to work each day. We are our God’s representative. Ambassador of Christ.

Every job has critical skill requirement. Christians or not, if we are hire to do a job, we better be good at it. Ecclesiastes 9:10 reads “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might”. This is also very relevant in today’s competitive environment. That’s why we must always improve and sharpen our skill.

Let’s turn to 1 Samuel Chapter 17 and read the story of David and Goliath. David is a confident boy when he saw Goliath. Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified (1 Sam 17:11). David asked, “who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Sam 17:26) but his brothers started to turn the issue around and scolded David (V27,28).

Look also at how David displayed his competency when he defeated Goliath. Verses 34-37 tell us that David has been trained and do well in fighting the wild beasts. Fighting this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them (v36). David also added that the Lord protect him likewise (V37). In fact David is so good at what he has been doing that he did not even require the extra gears given to him by Saul (v39). David told Goliath in verse 45, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me.”

Again, I repeat, when the Israelites army saw Goliath, they said “WOW, so big, cannot fight, sure lose!” but David didn’t think so, when he saw Goliath, he said, “WOW, so big, cannot miss, sure win!”

To display our faith in the workplace, we must carry the attitude of David fighting Goliath. Have confidence in our God but also competent at doing our job.


3. CHARACTER at our workplace

Our character at our workplace speaks volume. Again, we can be the best programmer or best accountant at work, but if we cannot be trusted or is known for deception, our faith means nothing to others at our workplace. Integrity at workplace cannot be compromised.

Back to the choice of the Dentist I mentioned earlier, if Dentist B excels in his dental work but one of poor integrity, I will advise you to look for another dentist.

The Bible has plenty of instructions on building Christian characters. We are told not to conform to the standard of this world. David refused to wear Saul’s gear (1 Sam 17:39). No, we do not have to wear the world’s uniform. The Apostle Paul’s Epistle talks about rules for holy living, this is in Colossians. In Ephesians, he talked about be imitator of God. How our characters should be pure, no foolish talk, coarse joking. We are to be honest, love righteousness and justice. Likewise, James and Peter also have something to say about Christian living. Even the old testament has laws and regulation that guide the Israelites. For example, the ten commandments.

This is probably the most difficult part in our workplace as most of us work in a non-Christian organization. When our colleagues start a gossip, do I join in or do I stop them or walk away? Foul language can easily be learned. Greed, inconsiderate may become norm. Are we feeding our new nature?


Conclusion

Having these three simple characteristics in mind can prepare us to exercise our faith at our workplace. If our co-workers witness our confidence in our God, that we are a competent worker who have integrity and full of Christian characters, it is more likely that he will listen to us. Let us remember these three principles as shown to us by David, it will challenge us as well as encourage us to stand up for our faith.

Psalm 100

Psalm 100 A psalm. For giving thanks.

Let us begin by reading the first verse of Psalm 100 and 66. Wait a minute there is no Psalm 166. If you are looking for it, you have not read your Bible enough to realize there are only 150 Psalms. What I mean is to read the first verse of Psalm 100 and the first verse of Psalm 66. Let’s read 66 first.

Shout with joy to God, all the earth! Psalm 66:1

Now turn to Psalm 100.
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 100 is known as a Psalm for thanks giving and sometimes also refer as a Psalm of praise. But I recently found out that of the 150 Psalms, about 70% of it takes the form of lament and only a minority focus on praise and thanksgiving.

When you read the Psalm, it is like a roller coaster ride of emotion and moods fighting against each other. On one end we read about a deep despair and doubts and then on the other end we read about the soaring confidence and praise to God. Doubts. Paranoia, meanness, delight, hatred, joy, praise, vengefulness, betrayal – you find it all. The Psalms give us a comprehensive record of life with God through an individual accounts of the author. It is like a spiritual journal of a personal letter to God. 73 or about half of the Psalms are attributed to David. By reading his Psalm we see that David maintained a very personal relationship with God. By comparing the Psalm he wrote and then compare with the historic record in 1st and 2nd Samuel, we caught David’s spiritual and personal journey with God.

His psalms form a record of his conscious effort to orientate his daily life to God. We on the other hand, fill our day with activities after activities and then try o carved out sometime for spiritual activity such as coming to church and worship. Worship to David and the Psalmists was the central activities in life, not something to get over so that we can get back to our activities. They made God the center of their life so that everything relate to God. It is the other way round.

And so when we read Psalm 100 we can truly appreciate the thanksgiving and the praise because it is as real as the author can experience which he instructed us to do.

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
In praise, the creature happily acknowledge that everything good and beautiful and true in the universe come from the creator. Here it tells us that praise need not be sober and reflective. We are to shout for joy to the Lord and in Psalm 66 shout with joy to the Lord because the world cannot contain the delight God inspires.
We shout for our team, our child for joy. But not just us, it did not say only the supporter of Jehovah is to shout for joy. All the earth is suppose to shout. We will see why later in verse 3.

2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Verse 2 give us the attitude of gladness and the action of come to him with joyful songs.

Actions of bowing, singing, praising, jumping, serving, giving, preaching …

Uplifted hands (Psalm 63:4)

Matt 5:8 - “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me” (Matthew 15:8). Can’t be hypocrite.

Worship is both a subjective experience and an objective activity. Let me share with you what Warren Wersbe had written in his book real worship.

In John 4:4. the Lord Jesus said that his worshippers must worship him in spirit and in truth. In spirit (not capitalized) is the subjective part and in truth is the objective part.

So when worship God, we let our spirit take control. When John says worship in spirit and in truth, he is talking about worship God through our personal experience. Worship should be a result of our response to God. In short, it is our personal relationship with Him. Don’t misunderstand me here, we must not neglect the Holy Spirit to guide us. I believe the Holy Spirit will not violate our personality but use it to express our praise to god. This is why no two believers can have identical worship experience even though they participate in the same service, at the same time, in the same venue. My worship experience this morning is not the same as Eng Hock or Simon or Alvin because we all have different personal experience and relationship with the same God. Eng Hock was jumping and clapping when we sang “Hallelujah to The Lamb” just now, I wasn’t but we both worship with gladness, although the degree may be different. So it is very subjective.

On the other hand, objective truth cannot be changed, even though our understanding or our experience may change. Verse 3 reads: Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Two things to take note. Number 1 is that truth is important. It is such a sad affair that million of people are worshiping God without the correct truth. Hence knowledge is important. Here it reminds us that God made us. It reminds us of the relationship of creature and creator. We know that He is the God who made us, hence as the creature, we enjoy the creation and honor the creator. The Holy sovereign God is eternal. Matter is not eternal, hence we don’t worship the creation but the creator. Remember we are his. As sheep of His pasture reminds us again of a God who will take care of us.

We must equip ourselves with knowledge about our God so that we can worship him. Knowing the truth such as Trinity, salvation, holy Spirit and His son, Jesus Christ. Also He is a living God, Christ is sinless , God is love and willing to forgive, the resurrected Lord cannot be changed or compromised. We sang Hallelujah to the lamb. The truth is the Lamb takes away our sin. So when we worship Him this morning, we must not under mind this truth. Here all of us in the church must subscribe to the written truth in the Bible. We must keep the right balance. Bible knowledge must come with personal spiritual experience. While we must not base our theology on experience neither must we debase our theology by divorcing it from experience.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

Worshipper must be active participants. We are to give thanks and to praise His name.
I. Thanksgiving is the Only Appropriate Response for What God Has Done for Us.
1) Thanksgiving requires us to focus on the blessings that God has provided.
2) When we stop focusing on the blessings God has provided, we lose our perspective regarding thanksgiving.
3) When we lose our perspective regarding thanksgiving, our relationship with God will begin to suffer.
4) Thanksgiving is the only appropriate response if we wish to maintain our relationship with God.
II. Thanksgiving Brings About A Change of Attitude In Our Lives.

Thanksgiving leads to humility, dependence on God in prayer and joy.
III. Thanksgiving Spurs us to Action for the Welfare and Benefit of Others.

5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

However, we are called to worship our God is not a one way street command. God himself prove to us that He is worthy of our praise because He is good and He is faithful forever.

Complaining and questioning slander God, and they also reveal pride. We are freed from these bad attitudes when we hold on to one simple truth: God is good. He is always good. He can't be any other way. His nature is good, and He always acts in accordance with His nature. We must hold steadfastly to our knowledge that God is good because appearances will sometimes indicate otherwise.

We don’t have to go far. Psalm 103 sum up nicely why God is good.

Psalm 100 not only called us to worship but also tell us how to worship. The Psalmist, in an especial manner, invites believers to praise God, because he has chosen them to be his people, and has taken them under his care.

Patience and trust in God

Patience and trust

As Christian, we trust in our God. However, trusting God does not mean that bad things will not happen to us. Trusting God does not guarantee that we will not suffer. Unfortunately we live in a sinful world and no one is spare from the consequences of sin.

Looking at the suffering world, the inevitable question arise: Where is God? How can a loving God allow the world to suffer and maintains silence. Christian still live in poverty, get sick, persecuted and even people like Job, Abraham, Habakkuk and all the heroes of faith mentioned in Hebrews 11 endures long drought when miracles did not happen, when God seemed not just invisible but wholly absent. He does not seem to care. The cry out of “Why?” and “How long more?” echo through.

Reading through the Bible, it is clear that many faithful servants of God were not spare of the calamity and suffering. Abraham climbing the hill with his son, Isaac at Mt Moriah. Job scratching his boils under the hot sun, David hiding in a cave, Elijah moping in a desert, Moses pleading for the unthankful Israelites – all these heroes experience crises moments that sorely tempted them to judge God as uncaring, powerless, or even hostile. Confused and in the dark, they faced a turning point: whether to turn away embittered or step forward in faith. In the end, all chose the path of trust, and for this reason, we remember them as giants of faith.

Unfortunately, not everyone passes those test of faith with flying colours. The Bible is littered with tales of others – Cain, Samson, Solomon, Judas – who flunked.

Likewise, we have read and witnessed thousands of modern day saints who steadfastly cling to our God despite the suffering and set back.

What are the qualities that these people have that help them to preserve till the end?

Our sister Angela Koon suffered brain aneurysm while visiting London. Stranded in a foreign city with very little help, she and husband Koon endured the hardship and God seems very far away; yet as Koon testified, God is the one that he rely on. She was admitted to hospital and have to insert a shunt to drain out the fluid. Again and again, operations have to be repeated because the shunt was failing. Doctors have no ideas why it did not work. Meanwhile, the whole congregation here in KK wondered and cried out on behalf, “Lord have mercy on sister Angela and give strength to Brother Koon”. “Oh Lord, How long more?”, cried our sister Angela. Humanly speaking, the suffering, the repeat operations, the cost, the stress and the doubts are mounting, Where is our God?

In the midst of the crisis and suffering, Brother Koon maintained the calm and confidence that he always carry. I found no hint of despair or even anger towards our God in his email. While still in my doubt, Brother Koon sent an email that kept me pondering for days. This is what he wrote:

Hope that you all had a Good Christmas and New Year. At least Angela managed to spend Christmas at home with the family and Lucas before she was readmitted. She is currently having an external shunt since last tuesday, and this has drained the pressure from her brain and she is quite lucid tho sometimes also confused. She thought that she was in KK Centerpoint at one time. But she is getting stronger as she recovers from the three previous operation. Poor girl has so many scars on her head. She sometimes get depressed and cries asking how long more. Then we share some bible verses togather for assurance and strentgthening and pray and this helps. We just have to learn to be patient and trust in Him, even hard it sometimes seems. She is stable at the moment and can sit up. With the external shunt, the doctors can seem what pressure level and type of shunt is needed for her case. Even the doctors are stumped at why her internal shunt malfunctioned 3 times. If all goes well, she will go for another shunt implant on Friday, and we earnestly pray that this one will work and will be the last operation for her. It is so painful to see her confinded to bed for so long and getting dispirited. We are comforted being encircled by your prayers and love and those of our Grace Chapel family. It gives us great encouragement. Please pray for a successful operation on Friday.

We just have to learn to be patient and trust in Him, even hard it sometimes seems. Here I learned the two greatest lessons taught from those who suffered. Patience and trust are the keys of endurance that will carry us trough.

Life of faith consists of patience and hope. The reason we are patient is because we have hope. The reason we have hope is because we have seen and tasted it. Patience formed by a long memory and hope that our faithfulness will prove worth the risk. We therefore live in the past and future. Live in the past in order to remind myself what God has done and to gain confidence in what He might do again. A record of God’s faithfulness in the past combines with hope in the future equip me for the present. That is why when God spoke to the Children of Israel, He called Himself, “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”, He wants to remind His chosen people of the history with them.

The second element spoken by Brother Koon is trust. We trust God because God knows our problem and He promised that He will see it through. Hebrews says that we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet without sin. Truly nobody knows the trouble we have seen – nobody but Jesus. Jesus came down from heaven descending so far that the process he made us more comprehensible to God. Look at how Jesus responds to the sisters of Lazarus, to a widow who just lost her son or a leprosy victim banned outside the town gates, Philip Yancey says that Jesus gives God a face and that face is streaked with tears.

With my recent fall that broke my tibia bone, the right foot began to drop due to some nerve damage, doctors and friends all said the same thing: You need to have patience and it takes time to heal. Patience is needed because it has proven from the past that there is hope in waiting. I need to trust God too because God heals in His time.

The fall

April 18, 2006 was a normal working day. Normal as hotel was busy and today we have our regular management workout day. We believe a healthy body will have a healthy mind, so the management at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort has scheduled that every Tuesday at 5pm we will gather for some games and fun. So far, we have run on the beach, have aerobic session, played soccer as well as beach volley ball. Today's game is "Touch football". We are to play the Australian rule rugby only that instead of tackle, one only need to touch the opponent.

After a brief warm up and rules explained we started the game. Barely 5 minutes after the game started, the ball was passed to me. I ran across the field to avoid the opponent and head for the end zone. Suddenly I felt there was a muscle cramp on my right foot and begin to lost control. At the same instant, Mr Andersen, my opponent team gave me a push, my whole body catapulted and I landed on the side walk with scratched arm and severe pain on my right leg. I have no feeling on my right foot. Laying on the side to wait for the pain to subside, an ice pack was placed underneath my calf which was very painful. A masseuse was called to give a little massage. However, when the pain did not stop, masseuse left and hotel van was asked to send me to SMC, Sabah Medical Center. Wheel chair was used to send to Blue Note entrance to the waiting van.

Upon arrival at SMC at about 640pm. Resident Doctor, Davies Hong was taking shower and I waited for a few minutes and was attended to. He examined and said that there is muscle spasm and probably some torn ligament. He gave me some pain killer and advised to return the next day and appointment with Dr Surinder on 19/4/06 at 11am was made. No X-ray was taken.

My wife, Flora picked me up and we returned home. After taken shower, dinner and the medicine, I noticed that the right calf was swollen and right leg was uncomfortable and painful. I was not comfortable and called Dr Ong of Klinik Jaya and he advised that there is risk of compartment syndrome where the lower foot may be starve of blood supplies and I should go back to SMC for them to monitor. He also called Dr Hong. Dr Ong then called back and advised me to be admitted to SMC.

We went back to SMC at about 930pm and Dr Hong noticed the swell and arrangement was made to be admitted.

I was admitted to room 312. The nurse enquired when was the last time meal was taken and said that operation can only be conducted four hours after meal. Some time later, a nurse came and asked me to change to operation garment as I will be operated. I told her that no doctor has seen me yet. About half an hour later, Dr Heng came and introduced himself, He said as the right foot is cold and may turn blue soon, I need to have operation on the calf to release the pressure. Consent form was given and signed.

Operation was done around 1230am - 1am. Spinal epidural was used. After operation, as the lower limbs are numb, I was able to sleep. Woke up at about 6am, 19/4/06, Wednesday with severe pain on the right foot. Asked nurse for Doctor Heng and was told he was out station and will be back in the afternoon. I called Hotel to enquire telephone number of SMC. Called SMC and spoke to Dr Heng’s aides and was advised that doctor will be back at 3pm. From 6am to 3pm, no doctor attending and I was in excruciating pain. It was the most painful 9 hours I have to endured while waiting for the doctor.

Doctor Heng came at 3pm and was told of the continued pain and swell. He said it is not a traumatic fall and cannot be serious. He checked and did not suspect any fracture. He was happy that the foot is warm and colour is good. He is concern with the blood flow and said that another operation to cut the other compartments need to be done. No MRI or X-ray was ordered. At about 330pm, another operation to cut open the compartments was carried out. Epidural on the spine was done again. By 8pm, my legs were wrapped up nicely but the three open wounds would remained open.

By mid night, I felt severe pain on my right foot again and after endured for about 2 hours, I decide that I could not bear it anymore and call the nurse. Nurse said he will contact Dr Heng.
Dr. Heng came at about 230am and commented that the foot was warm and colour pigmentation on the toes were good. He ordered the nurse to give me a jab which put me to sleep and ended the misery.

On 20/4/06, the pain and swell continued. The right foot could not be lifted up although it was possible to wiggle the toes. Dr Heng ordered for a wound clean up at 5pm and said that it is to be done at the operating theatre. This time I was sedated. Later he said that he will do another clean up at 8am next day, 21/4/06. Apparently, Dr Heng will be away until Sunday. He did the clean up at about 8am at the same ward (level 3) in one of the operation rooms and not the operating theatre. He ordered an MRI said I may be discharged and spoke to Flora. He told Flora that we can go home and that on Sunday when he returned he will call us to come back to clean up the wound.

I decided to wait till Saturday as my situation has not improved. The leg was swollen and still in pain.

An MRI was conducted in the morning of 21/4/06. In the afternoon, Dr Peter Ong came and see me explained that Dr Heng has asked him follow up with me as Dr Heng is away. I was disappointed because he could have told me. (I did not realize at that time that Dr Heng had spoken to my wife before he left.) Dr Ong explained that the MRI confirmed there is fracture to the plateau of the tibia bone. He also said that I will have to take an X-ray. An X-ray was taken in the late evening. Going home is out of the question now.

At about 8pm. Flora spoke to Dr Ong and was told that Dr Surinder will see me on the next day since the MRI and X-ray confirmed fracture to the tibia.

On 22/4/06, at 8am Dr Ong came and said that he had referred the matter to Dr Param who will take over the case. He further explained that since Dr Heng had discharged me, the case with him is more or less closed and it is alright to hand over the case to another doctor.

At about 830am, Dr Param came and explained on the fracture through MRI results. He said he had to assume the risk to operate now as I still have open wound. Operation is to be conducted as soon as possible. Depending on the condition, bone marrow may be taken from the hip and plate may be inserted.

At about 11am, it was a go ahead with the operation. This is the third epidural anesthetic through the spinal cord in 4 days. Dr Param inserted two screws to the fractured tibia. There was a posterior torn ligament but it was left as it is. No bone marrow or metal plate was needed.

Dr Heng dropped by on 23/4/06, Sunday afternoon trying to justify the situation and that he ordered the MRI. However, he never mentioned that he discharged me with a broken tibia.

It was rest days from 23/4/06 to 25/4/06 as it was decided that the open wounds are to be closed on the operation on 26/4/06. On 26/4/06, Wednesday afternoon at 1pm, the fourth operation was carried out. Another epidural spinal anesthetic was done. No skin graft was needed as Dr Param was able to stitch up all 3 wounds.

27/4/06 was a rest day. However, the right foot continued to be numb and not able to be tilted up. Dr Param is not sure if this has anything to do with the nerve. He said a nerve conduction test is to be carried out with the neurologist at my next visit.

28/4/06 another X-ray was taken in the morning. The X-ray shows the 2 screws that are in place. Dr Param was happy with the result and I was discharged at about 12 noon.

During the 11 days at SMC, streams of visitors from my family, Grace Chapel as well as the hotel dropped by to visit me. The room was full of flowers, fruits and drinks. Staff also brought in helium balloons which brighten up the room. The Church mebers are particularly encouranging because they always end the visit with a prayer. Little Joshua said the Lord's prayer each time he visited me. He even brought a ballon for me. My brother and sometimes my sister-in-law, Adrian and Sylvia visited me almost every night. Gene Chong was at the hospital everyday as she is visting a few patients there with her ministry with Agapage Counselling. Jenny Chong was also a regular visitor. She was good in bringing some food from outside as the food in the hospital is getting too monotonous and blend. Flora was coping better than I expected. She has gained a lot of confidence to be able to look after the household alone without depending on me. She has to wait up early to send the kids to school and then spend the day with me. She was worried and frustrated at times especially when knowing that the doctor has been negligence in handling me.

Three patients came and go while I stayed in ward 312. Mr Wong of Ranau was discharged on 22/4/06. The bed was later occupied by Mr Ho. Mr Ho is the husband of Karen, the X-ray radiologist from SMC. Earlier, Karen has came by and prayed for me. She is with the Basel Hakka church. Mr Ho had cut in wrist while transporting a piece of glass during his office move. The broken glass cut his tendon, artery as well as nerve. Dr param spent 3 hours to joins all back again. Mr Ho is quite a joker as he will entertain everyone visited him with his loud and funny jokes. After Mr Ho stayed for a night, the bed was occupied by Megat. Megat came in for a small operation on his thigh and we both left on the same day from SMC.

Looking back at the whole situation, there are certainly many areas that Doctor Heng could have done better. Granted that first operation to open up the calf to release the pressure and ensure blood supply to the foot was necessary. On the next day, after returning from Sandakan, he hastily ordered another operation to open up the other compartments was unnecessary. Instead an MRI or X-ray should be ordered, If this has been done and the root of the problem would have been discovered earlier, the right treatment would have been administered. The operation to open up the calf also have consequences on my nerve as now the right foot cannot tilt upwards. I ended up staying longer in SMC and paying more for many of the unnecessary suffering.

Joy

This simple three-letter word is not as simple as it looks or sounds. However, after some reading and searching on the Scripture, there are some simple facts that we can obtain.

I am not an expert in the subject of joy. You can buy or read in the internet, thousand of articles written by both professional as well as novice about this subject. There are books like the 10 keys to large amount of happiness and joy. There is web site that dedicated to this subject. Even in Christian web side or Christian book store, you can find title such as "the secret of Christian joy" or 10 steps to joy. But there are few things that I can share with you today. These are No. 1. Jesus promised us joy. No. 2 We ought to display joy because it is a manifestation of God’s love to us. Thirdly Real joy is not base on circumstance. Fourththly, Joy is one indicator of our relationship with God and that any hindrances must be eradicated. And Finally, we have to choose joy.

1. Jesus promised fullness of joy
Let us look into the bible where it speak about promised joy from God.

Luke 2: 10Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
God promised us His son and that whosoever believe in Him will have everlasting life. This is to say that salvation and joy come together. In Isaiah 12:3, we read "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation." And in Luke 10:20, we read that "rejoice that our name is written in heaven."

John 14: 11"These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. (Our joy is in relationship to his joy.)
It is a promise that the joy will remain in us and the Lord did not promise half joy but fullness of joy. And the beauty of this that in John 16:22, it says that no one can take away this joy.
John 16: 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy

2. Joy is the manifestation of God's love
Ironically, we see that church going people probably display the most grumpy face. In fact the, if you read the history of the church, there is one very interesting episode. As Julian saw it, Christianity took the vividness out of life.
Even after Constantine had made Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire, there came to the throne another Emperor called Julian, who wished to put the clock back and to bring back the old gods. His complaint, as Ibsen puts it, was: "Have you looked at these Christians closely? Hollow-eyed, pale-checked, flat-breasted all; they brood their lives away, unspurred by ambition: the sun shines for them, but they do not see it: the earth offers them its fullness, but they desire it not; all their desire is to renounce and to suffer that they may come to die."
Oliver Holmes, the Supreme judge of the USA was once asked what other profession will he take up if he isn’t a judge. This is what he said: "I might have entered the ministry if certain clergymen I know had not looked and acted much like undertaker."
In fact, we should be joyful as Peter said:
1st Peter Verse 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
John15:9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

3. Real joy is not based on circumstances.
As Jesus was preparing his disciples for his death and his departure from earth, he taught about joy.
John 16:22,33
So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
33"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
John16:22,33. Jesus did not promise us that it will be smooth sailing. In fact he says that in this world we will trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. He is telling us to have confidence in Him.
We have to understand there is a difference between the word happiness and joy.
The USA constitution include many rights and one of them is the right to pursue happiness. The problem is that happiness depends on happenings. In other words, "I am happy today" because some things just happened to turn out right. Happiness is linked to our situation. Joy on the other hand is different. It is deeper than that, Joy is an attitude, Joy is a choice. Joy is something that is not depending on circumstances. And Joy is also something which God expects of His people.
James1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
Examples in scripture:
-Famine (Habakkuk 3:17-18)
17 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD , I will be joyful in God my Savior.
-Imprisonment (Ac 16:22-25)
22The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. 23After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
-Poverty (2 Co 6:10)
sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
-Loss of property (Heb 10:34)
34You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.
-Persecution (Act 5:41)
41The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
And so then you start to realize that if God expects joy, then joy is not something that just happens, like happiness, but joy is something which we can have because God wants us to have it. And He even teaches us in His Word that it is a fruit of the Spirit, and so that the bottom line is that we are to be people of joy.
When the Spirit of God takes control of our lives, we can experience joy even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Joy is the inner celebration that comes from knowing God is sufficient for your every need.


4. Joy is a measuring tool that gauge our relationship with God
We see there is a relationship between Jesus’ joy and that of his disciples. Jesus indicates that he wants his joy to remain in his followers and if that happens their joy will be full. Second, we see that Jesus wants his followers to have a joy that is impossible for others to take away. This means this is regardless of any circumstances and even during time of trials.
While we know for sure that w will not lose our salvation. Make no mistake that we can relinquish the joy. I.e we can feel joyless. We can choose prison of feelings and emotions over joy of the Lord. Experiencing in sadness, disappointment, anger and all range of human emotions is inevitable, but to languish in them is our choice. And if we know that Christians has the joy of God and ought to show it. Therefore when we as Christian do not feel the joy anymore then we need to ask ourselves, why? And then take action.
We cannot have real joy without first realize that the joy of the Lord is our strength (Neh 8:10).
If our life is producing only a whine. Instead of wine. It is a crime for Christians to be weak in God’s Strength.
1 John 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4We write this to make our joy complete.
John is telling us here that our fellowship is with father and the son and that the joy is complete. What cause the joy to become incomplete that affect our fellowship? Could it be sin? Care of the world? Is our faith begin to wane? Could we be hiding or possess some resenting Spirit? Unforgiving? Or even burn out?
Adam & Eve
Gen3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?"
David is a man after God’s own heart. He enjoyed the presence of the Lord and God blessed him (1 Sam 13:14) However, we know that David was very unhappy when he wrote Psalm 51. He has lost all the joy because of his sin. He was out of fellowship with God. He has to ask God to restore His joy by confess his sin.
We have to keep up with our faith and not let our faith wane and got into sin.

5. Choose Joy
Someone sent me an email not too long ago. It is about 2 boxes. I am quite sure some of you would have received this too. Let me read it out to you.

I have in my hands two boxes,Which God gave me to hold.He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box,And all your joys in the gold."I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,Both my joys and sorrows I stored,But though the gold became heavier each day,The black was as light as before.With curiosity, I opened the black,I wanted to find out why,And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,Which my sorrows had fallen out by.I showed the hole to God, and mused,"I wonder where my sorrows could be!"He smiled a gentle smile and said,"My child, they're all here with me."I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,Why the gold and the black with the hole?"My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,The black is for you to let go."

Yes, we have to constantly look out for God’s blessing. Constantly look out for joy. For the more we have the more we will be able to generate. Unless we realise it we will be depress and the more depress we are, we will slip, we will be discourage and at the end lost the joy that we used to have. Let me share with you 2 examples.
When my father passed away on 31/12/04. We have to carry his body back to Lawas. So we use the service of Fook Look Siew to transport the body back. I was telling the people that no problem, put his body in the coffiin and I will drive my car and lead the way. But I was told that I must accompany him in the van. So I arranged for my cousin to drive my car and my youngest sister sat with me inside the van which carry the body back to Lawas, Now, this is what I was told and to some of you, you may know this. I have to guide my father back home. That is on the way whenever we cross the bridge, I have to tell him that we are crossing the bridge. Or going up or down the hill. Somehow this crossing of bridge is very important. So throughout the journey, we were looking for bridge and whenever we cross the bridge, my sister or myself will say something like "Pa, we are crossing the bridge now". I have travel back to Lawas for so many many times. But you know what? I never realize there are so many bridges. Some are more obvious while some are not. Anyway, on the way back,. While driving, I made a conscious bridge count and to my surprise there are more than 30, 33 to be exact of bridges. This goes to show that unless we make a conscious look out to joy and blessings, there will be many that passed us by that we do not even realized.
The next example I want to share is about pregnant woman. More than 10 years ago when my wife was preganant. Every time I accompanied her shopping in the mall, I found out that there are many pregnant ladies too. Today, I am sure there are as many, if not more pregnant women wandering in the mall but I don’t see them. You see, if you are surrounded by a pregnant lady, you are make consious of it and suddenly you start to notice those around you. So is the case with joy. If we surround ourselves with all the joyful people, we will notice all the joy that radiates and surround us. We in tuen become more cheerful and joyful.
The moral of the stories is that if you want more joy, fill yourself with more joy and surround yourself with joyful people then your joy will multiply. So in conclusion. 1 God promised us joy and you can get the joy from the Lord Jesus. Watch out for the joyless life and have a good fellowship with our Lord. To have more joy, have more of Jesus and the more you have Him, you will experience more joy and with more joy, you would want more of Him. This will create endless joy. It is like a cycle.
